You can trace the origins of Nioxin shampoo, or what they label as their 'cleansers', back to 1987 when Nioxin founder, Eva Graham, noticed that her hair was thinning after the birth of her child. It was then that she came upon the very elemental idea of applying skincare to hair care, or more specifically, to scalp care.
The scalp, after all, is skin, so as basic as this idea seems, the intended effectiveness of the idea is because it addresses the root (so to speak) of the problem of thinning hair – the health and condition of the scalp. More than 20 years later, Nioxin offers a full line of products for scalp care and hair care that for many have proven effective for combating the problem of thinning hair.
Let's Keep It Clean
Having a clean scalp is essential to having a healthy scalp. Your skin's sebaceous glands secrete an oily substance called sebum which lubricates the skin and hair, plus it functions as an anti-bacterial. Despite how necessary sebum is, if it's not cleaned away properly, it can build up and clog hair follicles. Nioxin shampoos, what Nioxin calls its cleansers, are designed to detoxify the scalp by unclogging sebum from hair follicles. They also clean away fatty acids and debris left from exposure to the environment.
When being introduced to Nioxin, expect to start with at least one of the Thinning Hair System Kits. Each kit includes a cleanser, an optimizer (conditioner), and a scalp treatment, but they are also customized to address different hair types and conditions. If for example your hair's texture is fine, your kit will have a volumizing cleanser. If on the other hand the texture of your hair is medium to coarse, your kit will have a moisturizing cleanser.
Depending on the Thinning Hair System Kit that best suits your hair's texture and condition, your cleanser will have one of Nioxin's many patented technologies that reportedly have been so successful for so long in helping clients with thinning hair. Nioxin's Activ-Renewal has a combination of white tea extract, peppermint oil, and cleansing agents. Nioxin's Scalp Access Delivery System contains vitamins, botanicals, SPF 15 sunscreen, and purifying agents. Nioxin's Transactive Delivery System cleanser is also formulated with vitamins, botanicals, and purifying agents, but contains antioxidants as well.
You can, however, customize your hair system further if need be by choosing cleansers from Nioxin's Intensive Therapy line of products or its Scalp Recovery line. If, for example, you live in a hard water area or swim in a pool regularly, the Intensive Therapy Clarifying Cleanser is designed to clean away mineral deposits and neutralize chlorine as well as remove build-up from styling products and environmental deposits. If your scalp suffers from dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis (also known as seborrheic eczema) the Medicated Cleanser from the Scalp Recovery line is formulated with dermatological ingredients to eliminate the scalp's irritation and flaking and in turn reduce hair loss that can accompany itching.
As you see, Nioxin maintains that it has the right combination of the right ingredients in its cleansers. It's then up to you to simply use the cleansers properly – Wet your hair and scalp thoroughly with water; apply the cleanser to your hair and for at least one minute, massage it gently into the scalp and work the lather down along the length of the hair; finish by rinsing thoroughly with warm water.
